What is a Bass Guitar?

The bass guitar, sometimes called electric bass, is a plucked string instrument (chordophone) that resembles and is built like the electric guitar. The bass guitar produces lower frequencies when its metal strings vibrate over the magnetic pickups (or non-magnetic pickups that are occasionally used). These pickups transmit the sound to the amplifier and the speaker.

The body of this guitar is made of wood, usually alder, ash, or mahogany. The fingerboards are made of maple, rosewood, or ebony and they are longer than in an electric guitar. Typically the fingerboard is fretted but there are also fretless bass guitars.

The bass guitar player is called bassist or bass player.

The bass guitar is utilized in many music genres and musical styles including pop, rock, jazz, hip hop, country, R&B, and even in classical music.

There are several types of bass guitar including electric, acoustic, acoustic-electric, and semi-acoustic.

There is also a string instrument called “Double Bass” also known as “The Bass”. It is the largest and the lowest-pitched string instrument that is played with a bow or by plucking. It is used in Western classical music and in many bands from different genres.

Some of  the differences between the bass guitar and other guitars:

  • Most bass guitars have four strings but you could find five, six, seven, and eight-stringed bass guitars too.

  • The bass guitars have thicker strings than other guitars.

  • Almost all bass guitars are electric.

  • The pitch range of the bass guitars is an octave lower than standard guitars.

  • Traditionally the bass guitar plays a supportive role to the band and the standard guitar plays the solos.

  • The sound of the strings is tuned an equal distance from the one above making it very symmetrical and easier to play.

  • The bass is usually tuned E A D G.

  • If there is a 5th string it is usually tuned to B0 and if there is a 6th, it's tuned to C3

  • The bass guitars are longer than the standard guitars therefore have longer strings,  lower pitch, and long scale.

The Role of a Bassist In a Band

The bass guitar has a responsibility to keep the rhythm in the band, which puts more responsibility on the bass player. A band may be able to get by with a “bad guitarist” but never with a “bad bassist”. The whole feel of the music is brought by the bass guitar linking the harmony and the rhythm of the song. The bassist keeps the timing and the pulse of the song. It’s like keeping a heartbeat of the song.

History of The Bass Guitar

During the 1990s the five-stringed bass guitar became more widely available. Many bassists switched to this type of bass due to the added lower range.

How To Play The Bass Guitar

  1. Playing the bass guitar starts with learning the parts of the instrument.

  2. Sit upright with the body of the guitar in your lap, elbows slightly bent and arms loose and relaxed. You could also stand but it is recommended you use a strap to help with carrying the weight of the instrument.

  3. If you are right-handed you would hold the neck and frets of the guitar with your left hand, your right forearm would rest on top of the body of the guitar while comfortably reaching the guitar strings.

  4. Get familiar with the names and notes of the strings.

  5. To play a note pluck the strings with your index and middle finger.

  6. Learn about the note names for each fret on each string.

  7. Press a string right behind a fret to sound a note.

  8. Sign up for bass guitar lessons at our music school so you can learn from an experienced bass teacher who is ready to happily show you many tips and tricks that will make your bass learning easier and enjoyable. They will teach you performance techniques along with music theory and composition.

Is Bass Guitar Easy To Learn?

If you are just starting out, and especially if you have already learned to play classical or electric guitar, you will likely find it easier to learn to play the bass guitar.

However, just like any other instrument, learning to play the bass takes some practice, dedication, and most of all developing enjoyment and love for the instrument.

Taking private bass guitar classes from a qualified and dedicated bass teacher, like the teachers at our Academy, will make this learning process much easier, faster, and way simpler.
