Winter Recital - December 18th and 19th 2021 We are going virtual

Our Winter Recital is just around the corner! We will be having our recital once again streamed online through YouTube and Facebook on Saturday, December 18th and Sunday, December 19th, 2021. Dress up like Avni and Upen did for their winter recital last year and have fun performing your pieces! Teachers will be speaking with students and parents directly regarding which pieces they will be performing, however, all video submissions will be due by December 4th, 2021.

When sending your files, it’s best to use a file-sharing website such as WeTransfer. You can send files up to 2Gb, and don’t need an account! If you want specific instructions on how to use WeTransfer please let us know. When recording your video, make sure to record horizontally/landscape (—–) and in a well-lit room. Have the recording device close to the performer, so that we can hear everything clearly. For those using a backing track, make sure the volume is loud enough to hear both the performer and their backing track. Try to avoid recording in front of a window, as the natural light may cause a silhouette on the performer.

Want to catch up on our previous recital videos? Check out our YouTube playlists HERE for the Summer 2021 recital and HERE for the Winter 2020 recital.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask your teachers and the Front Desk staff. We look forward to seeing everyone’s wonderful recital videos very soon!

Student of The Month

Sadie D

We are very excited to announce that our October 2021 student of the month is Sadie D! Sadie takes vocal classes with Mr. Sam! Sadie also takes piano classes with Mr. Geoff as well and is doing a tremendous job. Here’s what Mr. Sam has to say about Sadie’s wonderful achievements:

“Sadie comes to lessons practiced and ready to go with an inspiring eagerness to grow her voice. She’s been working hard each week to perfect her vowels and warm-ups and I can’t wait for everyone to hear her rendition of “Tomorrow” from Annie! Fun fact: in her spare time Sadie’s been trying to master her ventriloquism skills! “

We also asked Sadie a few questions. Here are her answers:

What instrument(s) do you play?   Piano and Singing

How long have you been taking lessons?  3 years

What’s your favourite song to play? Colours of the Wind

What’s your favourite food? Pizza

What is your favourite thing you’ve learned in class recently? Learning how to read and play chords

What is your favourite colour? Turquoise

Congratulations Sadie! We are so proud of your achievement, we can’t wait to see what you do next!

Teacher's Corner • Ms Vira's BIG project!

Vira

Here at Mississauga Fine Arts Academy, we are big advocates for all kinds of wonderful talents our teachers and students have. It is our great pleasure to introduce new work from our most talented teacher Ms. Vira. If you never met Vira you’ll be amazed how much talent, professionalism and love for music Vira has. Here is what she says about herself and her new project.

I am Vira Burmenko, an award-winning, gypsy-punk, dancing electric violinist and a composer (MA, BFA Music York University). I have performed for nearly 20 years and my music is featured in multiple short films, the award-winning web series Marked, and on Netflix’s Hemlock Grove! For the past five years, I have explored the healing power of nature and sound vibration: spirit drumming in the woods and in contrast – rocking out with my electric violin. I believe metal is another side of the meditative experience music has to offer and I can not wait to bring you this epic album!

About the project

Obsidian is a journey of self-discovery, diving into depths and darkness that lives within us all and bringing it into the light. Just as it takes centuries for a rock in geological and volcanic processes, erosion, and corrosion to become a gem – it takes time and effort for us humans to grow and evolve through our experience! Remember that you are not lost – you are a gem in the making!

Through the connection with our origins in nature and its healing power – I want to bring to you the first-ever neo-shaman, an electro-acoustic album that will have the power to heal our minds and bodies, empower the soul and set our spirits on fire!
This album will be darker, bolder and showcase more contrasts in range, texture and tone than my first solo album Iron Fiddle Saga. I am not holding back in my musical and emotional statements. Everything that was missing from my first album is coming to haunt you in Obsidian!

What this project means to us:

Your contribution will be helping me complete my necessary research and writing process, which involves:

– Creative sessions on Indigenous practices with the native Canadian multi-artist David R Maracle of Mohawk Tribe Bear Clan
– Creative sessions with Gary Diggins on mindfulness in music practice & improvisation
– Khomus (Jew Harp) Lessons
– Overtone singing lessons
– Collaboration with my fellow artists: Pianist and vocalist Nina Soyfer, singer-songwriter Arianna Mae, & harpist Rachel Easson, who will co-create original arrangements for their instruments and vocal ideas on my songs
– Exploring a ton of new instruments from around the world: native love flute, tribal drums, didgeridoos, tempura, African harp, sitar, santur, as well as custom-built unique creations, and innovative techniques of playing on them.

I am just 3,000 CAD short of completing my work! The deadline is December 31st, 2021, and we could use your help to make it in that time; so we can then focus on recording the music and getting the complete album in your hands & ears soon!!!

What you help us achieve:

With your help, we will create an album that will blow you away, inspire and empower you and other artists like us, who dare to take a chance and make the music they love, despite obstacles we are all facing in the unpredictable world. Together, and by example, we will be empowering other independent artists around the world to pursue their true calling, stand up for their beliefs and be unafraid to stand out, come out of the shadows and into the light!!!

What We Need & What You Get:
We ask for 3,000 CAD to match the amount of the grant I received from the Ontario Arts Council to help create this album!!!

We have the most fantastic perks for you with goodies ranging far and wide

Can’t wait to see you inside your perk of choice!!! Pick one or a couple below!!!
Or simply contribute any amount in the BACK IT option!
